The Vilmorin arboretum and its buildings, located in Verrières-le-Buisson, former hunting relay of Louis XIV, were acquired by Philippe André de Vilmorin in 1815. The choice of this place was made especially for the quality of its soils and its proximity to Paris. This four-hectare park, surrounded by walls attributed to André Le Nôtre, is transformed by Philippe-André de Vilmorin into a place of acclimatization of trees and shrubs from all over the world.

In 1821 he acquired land near Nogent-sur-Vernisson (Loiret), which became the Arboretum des Barres. Arboretum in which most of the Verrières-le-Buisson subjects were present, but on a larger scale. The Vilmorin arboretum is remarkable as a place of first acclimatization in Europe, in the mid-19th century, of trees and shrubs from all regions of the world.

Varieties often reported by missionaries and explorers sent by the Vilmorin family (the Far East, America, North Africa, Siberia and Caucasus).
