About

Nemausus is the ancient name of the present city of Nîmes. From the third century B.C., it is the capital of the tribe of the Arecomic Volcanoes, one of the tribes of Gaul in Narbon. In Roman times, the city was one of the largest in Gaul in terms of area and had 20,000 inhabitants at its peak.

By comparison, Lugdunum (Lyon) capital of Gauls, at the same time had about fifty thousand inhabitants. We are located in an arid region which, however, has a water supply thanks to an important source. This source soon became a sacred place in the eyes of the inhabitants of Nîmes.
