Church building
cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Besançon
Saint-Étienne de Besançon Cathedral was a religious building located on the site of the present citadel of Besançon in Franche-Comté. It was built on an unknown date, but documents and an important conflict known as the dispute of chapters indicate that the building would have been built as a church before St John's Cathedral, starting in the third century. The real cathedral was built from 1033 to 1085, thus competing with the near chapter of Saint John, before being definitively demolished to allow the construction of the citadel of Vauban.
