Caen Castle is a fortified complex of the ancient city centre of Caen, which stands on a rocky spur in the territory of the French commune of Caen, in the Calvados department, in the Normandy region. Founded around 1060 by Duke Guillaume of Normandy, it has been redesigned over the centuries. With its 5.5 hectares, it is one of the largest castles in Europe. The castle, with the exception of buildings built in the 20th and 21st centuries, is classified as historical monuments. Since the second part of the 20th century, the castle has been home to two museums (the Caen Museum of Fine Arts and the Normandy Museum). Several works of art were installed inside the castle.

Location: The castle is established in the plain of Caen, on the southern edge of a plateau of mediocre elevation that interposes between this plain and the coast of the Channel, dominating far enough the Odon, and the lower valley of Orne, in which the ancient city of Caen developed. The stronghold created by Guillaume de Normandie was located in the center of the western lands of his duchy, near the most favorable crossing point for the roads passing from the east to the west of the duchy....
