About

The castle of Charbonnières (in Latin castrum carbonria) or castle of Aiguebelle (in Latin aqua bella or aqua pulchra), is a former castle, from the eleventh century, renovated to the sixteenth century, whose remains stand on the town of Aiguebelle in the department of Savoie in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The Château de Charbonnières is the ancestral residence of the Counts in Maurienne, then of Savoie with Count Humbert, before they transferred their comtal residence to Montmélian, then in 1295 to Chambéry. The fortress was ruined in the 18th century.
