The Château de Faucigny is a former 11th century castle with ruins on the town of Faucigny in the department of Haute-Savoie, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Berceau des Sires de Faucigny, which controlled the Arve valley, became the seat of a chestnutry when they disappeared from the thirteenth century to the sixteenth century.
Situation: The remains of the Château de Faucigny are located in the French department of Haute-Savoie on the commune of Faucigny, on a dolomitic limestone rock, at 706 meters above sea level, overlooking the Arve valley and the commune of Contamine-sur-Arve.
History: An oppidum, quoted around 930[ref. necessary], would have preceded the castle. The castle, the cradle of the house of Faucigny, was certainly to exist by that date, although it was only mentioned explicitly in 1119. The castle is the "core" of their power, according to the expression of historian Nicolas Carrier. The seigneurs of Faucigny remained there until the beginning of the 13th century.
