Volcanological museum
La Cité du Volcan, called Maison du Volcan from its creation in 1992 until 2011, is a museum on Réunion Island, French overseas department in the southwest of the Indian Ocean. It is located in Bourg-Murat, village of La Plaine des Cafres located in the Hauts de la Commune du Tampon. The Cité du Volcan offers permanent exhibitions on the various volcanoes of the world and in particular on the Piton de la Fournaise, the active volcano of the island. The City of Volcan is one of four institutions of the Local Public Corporation Meeting of Regional Museums.
History: The existence of this museum is largely due to the will of the couple of volcanologists Maurice and Katia Krafft, who studied closely the eruptions of the Piton de la Fournaise, and both died on 3 June 1991 in a fiery cloud of Mount Unzen, Japan. Between 2011 and 2014, the site is fully rehabilitated from 1600 to 6,200 m2. This extensive work is led by Patrice Huet, then museum reference, who was appointed Scientific Director of the museum in 2013.
