colonne milliaire de Saint-Hippolyte
The Saint-Hippolyte Mile Column is not a mile itself, as it does not indicate many thousands of steps to the next major city on the Roman Way. It is an honorary Roman pillar, that is, erected by the inhabitants of the place in honor of the emperor who built or made maintain the Way... doubtless to be seen by the authority...
The number may also have been simply painted on the stone. The Saint-Hippolyte pillar is dedicated to Emperor Constantine the day after his arrival.
