High-speed railway viaduct
double viaduc TGV d'Avignon
The double viaduct TGV of Avignon located near Avignon, is an art work of 1,500 meters long composed of two viaducts. It provides the crossing of the Rhône, via the Mediterranean LGV to serve the Avignon TGV station. Divided in 100 m long spans, these two viaducts are, in 2012, among the largest prestressed concrete constructions, for a railway line.
History: Built between 1996 and 1999 for the implementation of the LGV Méditerranée, this viaduct was built by Bouygues Construction and GTM Construction. The technical study was conducted by RFR Engineers & Consulting Engineers. Its designer is engineer Michel Virlogeux and its architect is Jean-François Blassel. The first viaduct is called "TGV" and connects Paris to Marseille. The second viaduct known as "TGV Grand Sud" connects Marseille to Montpellier.
Positioning in the Mediterranean TGV route: The two viaducts cross the Rhône between the departments of Gard and Vaucluse. They gradually rise from the area of activity of Courtine, on the Avignon side. This development area consists of old agricultural plains protected by containment.
