Fountain
fontaine François Ier
The François I fountain is located in Cognac in Charente, Place de la Fontaine at the foot of the Château de Cognac.
History: It was rebuilt at the site of a pre-existing fountain already known as the "Francis I Fountain". It is located at the foot of the tower of Count Jean, to the left on the square that is approached by passing the gate of the city. While its classical architecture dates from the 17th century the writings of local historians give the beginning of the 19th century as the date of construction by architect François-Nicolas Pineau. It was moved a few meters in 1865.
The fountain has been listed as historic monuments since February 27, 1925.
Architecture: Build in stone, a local limestone it is classic style with oval dome and triangular pediment. It is decorated with sculptures, fancy bosses, basin pouring water and on the triangular pediment of fantastic animal heads.
