About

The enclosure of Perpignan is the whole of the military constructions girding and protecting the city of Perpignan, from medieval times until their dismantling to the beginning of the 20th century. During the Middle Ages, the city of Perpignan protected itself behind thick walls. From the Renaissance, the city, which became the issue of the Franco-Spanish struggles, hardly ceased to modernize them.

Depending on the progress of the artillery, new works were created, the ancients were removed or adapted with such consistency that at the end of the nineteenth century, the walls of the stronghold could tell all the evolution in the art of fortification since medieval times. Almost all of its ramparts were demolished in the first half of the 20th century. With the exception of the interior of the citadel, today there are only scattered remains, especially to the north-east of the city, and, of course, the emblematic Castillet and the Notre-Dame Gate that is attached to it.
