musée René-Baubérot
The René-Baubérot Museum of Arts and Folk Traditions, has been run by the municipality of Châteauponsac (Haute-Vienne) since November 2024. It was previously managed by the association law of 1901 Notre Terroir. With the name Musée de France, he occupies a former priory located in Place Saint Thyrse.
The museum was created in 1944 by René Baubérot (1903-1976), professor of history passionate about archaeology. We owe him the foundation of Notre Terroir, then the museum in 1944; from 1963 to 1976. In 1946, René Baubérot undertook excavations at La Bussière Étable on the site of an important Gallo-Roman villa where he discovered a tank grave whose furniture would be purchased by the Musée d'archéologie nationale de Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
Other elements discovered at Bussière Stable will be the museum's first fonds: a special hall dedicated to them. You can see beautiful vases and cinematic ballot boxes. Paul Schweitzer (1907-1984) also played a role in the reorganization of the museum from 1973 to 1982, creating the ethnographic sections of the museum, opening 17 rooms to the public in the space of ten years.
