musée de la Romanité
The Nîmes Romanity Museum is a museum located opposite the Roman amphitheatre of Nîmes, in the department of Gard and the Occitanie region. It opened on 2 June 2018. In the heart of the Nîmes city, facing the bimillennial arenas, this archaeological museum presents the city's collections, which are animated by 65 multimedia devices (increased reality, audiovisual technologies).
The origins of Nîmes are evoked by the remains of a monumental pediment that adorns the central atrium of the museum. The double-revolution staircase leads the visitor to the Gaulish era, then to the heart of Roman daily life, to the discovery of the city and its inhabitants nearly 2,000 years ago. It then crosses the Middle Ages, until the contemporary era, to discover the influence of Romanity over the centuries.
In the contemporary architecture of Elizabeth de Portzamparc, a toge of pleated glass whose glass blades evoke a mosaic, this place is both scientific museum, restaurant, Mediterranean garden. Its roof terrace offers 360° views of the most emblematic nîmes.
