The Museum of Angoulême (formerly "Museum of Fine Arts of Angoulême") is located in the heart of the historic centre of Angoulême, close to Saint Peter's Cathedral. Labelled "Musée de France", it presents important archaeological, ethnographic and artistic collections, and also hosts conferences and temporary exhibitions.
Presentation: The Museum of Fine Arts of Angoulême is one of the main museums in the capital, with the archaeological museum, the museum of resistance and deportation and the paper museum. It is also the oldest and has long been called the Museum of Angoulême. Built in the former bishopric since 1920 (after having long been installed in the town hall), it was first modernized from 1979 to 1983 (opening new halls) and again from 2002 to 2008 (refurbishing the building). The construction site is entrusted to architects Stéphane Barbotin-Larrieux and Paul Gresham. The main entrance is moved, visitors now accessing the museum by square Girard II (from the name of the bishop who originally built the cathedral). Access to collections has been paid for since 2016.
