The Galerie des Carrosses — formerly the Musée des Carrosses, until 2006 — is a museum of history and transportation located in Versailles (Yvelines), France, which presents a collection of carriages, mainly from the 19th century. Located in the public establishment of the Palace, Museum and National Estate of Versailles, it is housed in the Grande Écurie.
History: After the carriages were dispersed during the great revolutionary sales at the end of the French Revolution, this museum was created by King Louis-Philippe I in 1833 when he decided to turn Versailles into a museum dedicated to "all the glories of France". It is then installed in Trianon, in a small building built for this purpose by Charles-Auguste Questel, architect of the civilian buildings of Versailles. The first Trianon Cars Museum opened its doors to the public in 1851. In 1978, the Musée des Carrosses left the Trianon to be transferred to one of the galleries of the Grande Écurie, a site previously occupied by various administrations — the Ministry of Defense, the departmental archives, the École des beaux-arts — and recovered by the then conservative of Versailles, Gérald...
