About

The museum of 5 June 1944 "Message Verlaine" is a historical museum founded in 1991 in Tourcoing, northern department. It is housed in an old casemate that housed a German staff during the Second World War. This was where the Germans captured, on June 5, 1944, the second stanza of Paul Verlaine's fall song poem, issued by Radio London on the BBC at 9:15 p.m., announcing to the resistors the imminent landing of Normandy on June 6, 1944: "The long sobbing of autumn violins hurt my heart with a monotonous tongue...". Visits are made with volunteer guides, who make this place of memory live.
