The museum of natural history of Marseille, or MHNM, was created in 1819 by Jean-Baptiste, Marquis de Montgrand, mayor of Marseille from March 1813 to 1830 and the count of Villeneuve-Bargemon, then prefect. Since 1869, it has occupied the right wing of the Palais Longchamp built by architect Henri-Jacques Espérandieu (1829-1874), in the 4th arrondissement of Marseille.
