About

The royal necropolis of the Basilica of Saint-Denis houses the tombs of many French and French sovereigns, from Dagobert I to Louis XVIII. This necropolis is located in the Basilica of Saint-Denis north of Paris in the French department of Seine-Saint-Denis in the Île-de-France region. If some Merovingian kings then Carolingians established their last stay there, it was with the Robertians and Capetians that the royal necropolis installed in the church of Saint-Denis acquired its definitive status as a place of assembly of the royal burials.

Thus, the Capetian kings, with the exception of Philip I (Abbey of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire), Louis VII the Young (Abbey of Barbeau), Louis XI (Basilique Notre-Dame de Cléry), Charles X (Covent of Kostanjevica) and Louis-Philippe I (Royal Chapel of Saint-Louis de Dreux), all rest there. Gradually, the necropolis received burials, not only from kings and queens, but also from members of the royal family, as well as from great servants of the kingdom whom kings wanted to honor by allowing them to rest with them.
