About

Pech Maho's oppidum is a Celtic-era oppidum located in Sigean, Aude, Occitanie, France. The site was a fortified commercial counter occupied from the 6th to the 3rd century BC. There have been three apparently continuous successive occupations, probably by a people called Elisych ("Elisych" in Greek), located at the border of the Iberians to the west, and the Ligures to the east.

The site seems to be a commercial crossroads between the trading peoples of the Mediterranean (Phenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks) and the indigenous people. The site was finally abandoned following an almost total destruction at the end of the third century BC, which could be linked to the Second Punic War between Rome and Carthage.
