About

The thermal baths of Saint-Saloine refer to the remains of one of the two ancient Roman bath establishments identified in the Gallo-Roman city of Mediolanum Santonum (Saintes) in Charente-Maritime. The monumental thermal baths are, towards the end of the 1st century AD, the third phase of construction on a site occupied since the beginning of our Common Era, but the previous developments, which left only fleeting traces, are poorly characterized; They were workshops or houses, an unknown public building. Half the thermal complex remains inaccessible or has been destroyed.

The remaining vestiges, however, provide an outline of the overall plan of the complex, whose southern façade could be constructed as a monumental fountain, although this latter proposal is controversial. The remains were classified as historical monuments in 1904. They are one of four ancient monuments still visible in elevation in the city, with the arch of Germanicus, the amphitheater and the Gallo-Roman rampart.
