Vindunum (or Vindinum) is the ancient name of the present city of Mans, capital of the tribe of the Cenoman Aulers and later of all the Aulers. The city's urban space appears to have been settled from the third millennium B.C.E. The foundation of the city goes back beyond -50.
His inhabitants were appointed by Caesar in his War of the Gauls. The city became Roman in -56 and took the name of the Cenoman tribe of which it was the civitas, hence Celmans in the 7th century. The end time of the ancient city is only during the sixth century, going hand in hand with the end of the Christianization only from 453.
The final stop of the last pagan rites in the Gallo-Roman city is estimated with the capture of Le Mans by Clovis in 510. From now on, it will be the advent over the centuries of the medieval city of Old Mans.
