Church building
église Notre-Dame du Taur
The Church of Notre-Dame du Taur is a Catholic religious building located at No 12 bis rue du Taur, between the Place du Capitole and the Basilica of Saint-Sernin, in the city centre of Toulouse. According to the paleo-Christian tradition, the church was built at the place where Bishop Saturnin's martyred body would have detached itself from the bull that dragged him behind him: it holds his name – from the Taur, a bull in Occitan – from this event. A martyrium was built there by bishops Hilaire and Silve at the end of the fourth century.
The church, built between the 14th and 16th centuries, is one of the main monuments of Southern Gothic art. It is famous for its high façade, a bell tower-wall that fits into the constructions of the street. It is classified as historical monuments by the list of 1840.
