About

Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais Church is a Catholic parish church located in Bessancourt, France. Although the village was erected as a parish in 1189, the analysis of the architecture of the church did not allow the construction of the oldest parts, the choir and the transept, much before the middle of the 13th century. The work thus began after the founding of the Abbey of Maubuisson, endowed with Besancourt and Fréplion from the beginning thanks to the generosity of Blanche de Castille.

In a radiant Gothic style, the choir, the cross of the transept and the southern crusillon are of a finesse that the very sober exterior does not leave suspect: only the delicate reamping of the windows bears witness to the construction with great care. The nave and its sidelines are less elegant and obviously more recent. The large arcades with their large, isolated cylindrical pillars evoke the primitive Gothic style, but the friezes below the cutlery, the southeast pillar of the bell tower, the lower side and the high windows reveal a flamboyant Gothic style from the last quarter of the 15th century.
