église Saint-Martin d'Ahetze
The Saint-Martin church of Ahetze is located in the commune of Ahetze, in the French department of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Its construction dates from the 16th century. It has been listed as historic monuments since 1973. It is dedicated to Saint Martin.
Presentation: The Saint-Martin church, a crossing point on the road to Santiago de Compostela, began its construction in the 16th century. It contains a wooden statue of St. James dressed as a pilgrim dating from the 18th century, a wooden statue dating from the 18th century and representing a Virgin of the Assumption, an 18th century altarpiece and a procession cross dating from the 15th century. This cross, whose arms are garnished with bells, aroused during the witchcraft trials in the year 1609, the indignation of the counsellor of Lancre, who saw it as an evil object. His cemetery has an ancient discoidal stele. Another stele of Ahetze is exhibited at the Basque Museum and Bayonne History.
