About

Saint-Pierre Church is a Romanesque church located on the territory of the commune of Chissey-lès-Mâcon, in Clunisois, 32 kilometres northwest of Mâcon, in the French department of Saône-et-Loire in the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. As such, it is part of the parish of Saint-Augustin-en-Nord-Clunisois, which has its headquarters in Ameugny.

Protection: The nave and the bell tower have been classified as historical monuments since 7 February 1935, while the rest of the church has only been listed since 28 February 1927.

History: The church of Chissey-lès-Mâcon was built in the early 12th century and the original building remains the nave and bell tower. During the 19th century enlargement work, the original Romanesque bedside was destroyed and replaced by a portal, while a transept and a new apse were built to the west, giving the church its unconventional orientation: the main façade to the east and a bedside to the west. One of its oldest representations is a drawing made in 1848 by Rousselot, inspector of forests (volume preserved at the Academy of Macon).
