église Saint-Saturnin de Calvisson
The Saint-Saturnin church of Calvisson is a Gothic church of Romanesque origin located in Calvisson, in the French department of Gard in the Occitan region.
The village of Calvisson was mentioned in 1060 as In Terminium de Calvitione in the cartular of the Cathedral of Nîmes. The church appeared in 1114 under the name of Sanctus-Saturninus de Calvicino in the cartular of the monastery Saint-Sauveur de la Font in Nîmes, then in 1156 under that of Ecclesia de Calvitione in the cartular of the cathedral of Nîmes. Calvisson was part of the viguria and diocese of Nîmes. Originally a Romanesque building, the Saint-Saturnin church was, according to the archives, redesigned at the end of the 15th century in the Gothic style. This priory with cloister was heavily damaged during the wars of Religion that opposed Catholics and Protestants throughout the 16th century. Restored in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, the church unfortunately lost its cloister (north of the building), its bell tower, and its three southern side chapels.
