About

The chapel Notre-Dame d'Err, locally called Chapel of the Virgin, is a partly Romanesque church located in Err, in the French department of the Pyrénées-Orientales. A pilgrimage takes place every July 2.

Architecture: It is located 30 m south of Saint-Génis parish church and has been listed as a historic monument since 1993. Although a date engraved in the chapel indicates a first consecration in the year 934, the oldest elements of the building are in the nave, vaulted as a warhead cradle, and in the choir and dating back to the twelfth century. There are two side chapels and an 18th century bell tower, the only bell tower of the two churches. A wrought and golden grid separates the choir from the nave. In the background, an annex chapel replaced the ancient apse of Romanesque times. This last chapel was built in 1730 on the model of the camarills intended for the worship of the Virgin: raised by a few meters, it is accessed by side stairs. The statue of the Virgin which is set there is surmounted by a dome with at its top a lantern to illuminate the whole.
