château de Pierrefonds
The Château de Pierrefonds is an imposing castle built at the end of the 14th century, which stands on the French commune of Pierrefonds, in the department of Oise, in the Hauts-de-France region, at the south-east edge of the forest of Compiègne, north of Paris. The castle of Pierrefonds presents most of the features of the defensive work of the Middle Ages, making it an interpretation of the style troubadour of the nineteenth century, very popular with the Second Empire in the affluent classes. At that time it was rebuilt for Napoleon III by Viollet-le-Duc, who also undertook important work in the creation of decoration and furniture.
The castle is classified as historical monuments by the list of 1862. It is managed by the National Monuments Centre.
