musée des Moulages
The Museum of Moldings of the University of Montpellier Paul-Valéry was opened in 1890. It was born out of a Third Republic policy aimed at equipping French universities with collections of ancient works to promote the teaching of art history and archaeology, as was already done in Germany. While other collections of the same kind have appeared in Bordeaux, Lyon and elsewhere, Montpellier is the only one in France that has always continued to exist and operate in an academic setting.
The renovation of the museum between 2009 and 2015 and the classification of its collection as historical monuments reaffirmed its educational, scientific and heritage role. The collections also include a medieval art section and original antique objects.
