About

The cave of the Renne is one of the cavities of the site of the caves of Arcy-sur-Cure, in Yonne, Burgundy, France. Having delivered the only known series almost uninterrupted between the Moustarian and the Gravettien, it is the most important site known in the north of France for the Châtelperronien and, beyond this regionalism, it is the most emblematic and most documented site of this cultural facies. Its importance is, to this day[When?], capital for the question of the Neandertal/Homo sapiens transition.

His vestiges made it possible to affirm for the first time that Neandertalians were the authors of ornamental objects. This issue was highly debated and challenged. The latest analysis (2016) confirms this hypothesis.

It is just as important for the study of the Gravettien and is to date[When?] the only well-preserved Aurignacian deposit known in the Paris basin. It also delivered a small number of very rare remains of Neanderthalians, associated with lithic tools of the Moustarian toothed. Another curiosity is the presence of a small block of blue pigment, unique among French prehistoric sites.
