Notre-Dame du Suc is a basilica located in Brissac, France, in the Hérault department and in the Occitanie region.
Location: The sanctuary is located at Suc in Brissac. It is located 45 km north of Montpellier. It is supported by the massif de la Séranne, within the Causses et Cévennes, an area registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2011. It dominates the Hérault Valley at 325 m altitude.
Description: The current sanctuary is neo Byzantine style. Its outbuildings include a terrace, a cave of Lourdes and a Virgin of the Mountain. In Languedoc patois, "suc" means tart or hill.
History: The place was once the object of Celtic worship. Christian worship dates back to the seventh century. According to tradition, a statue of the Virgin Mary holding the child Jesus in her arms was discovered there in the eighth century, deciding the Benedictines of Brissac to build a chapel there (mentioned to the cartular of Maguelone in 1271). The chapel was rebuilt in 1700 by Jean de Courdurier, king's adviser, to thank the Virgin for a blessing. The current sanctuary was built in 1860 by the architect M. Chapot, a...
