Alpine garden
jardin alpin du Mont-Cenis
The Mont-Cenis Alpine Garden is a French Alpine garden located in Savoie, on the Plan des Fontainettes, on the edge of Lake Mont-Cenis, at 2,065 metres above sea level, next to the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Chapel.
History: The garden was created in the 1970s by Father Fritsch and its management was resumed in the early 2000s by the commune of Val-Cenis.
Collections: The garden has about 250 plant species in alpine and arctic environments, some of which are endemic to the northern Alps or the Maurienne. This is the case of the campanule du Mont-Cenis and the thought of Mont-Cenis discovered and described in the massif and named in his honour. Glaciers were known only in arctic environments before being discovered in 2004 in the massif and the garden is the only place in France where the yellow saponary can be observed.
