In the Middle Ages, the early Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, with the Basilica of Saint-Étienne and the Baptistery of Saint-Jean-le-Rond, constituted the ecclesia of the diocese of Paris, the episcopal group that preceded, from the 6th to the 12th century, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris of Bishop Maurice de Sully. Jean Hubert versus Victor Mortet: Reversing the thesis supported in 1888 by Victor Mortet, whose conclusions were accepted by archaeology until 1938, Jean Hubert placed Saint-Étienne to the west of the present cathedral, and the early Notre-Dame cathedral to the east, on the location of the choir. According to Victor Mortet, the church whose western wall was about 40 meters ahead of the present façade would have been dedicated to Notre-Dame and would have been used until the end of the 12th century.
