The Basilica Saint-Bonaventure de Lyon is a religious building dedicated to Catholic worship, located in the heart of the Presqu'île in Lyon in the Cordeliers district. This church remains the only medieval building that remains in the north of the 2nd arrondissement since the breakthrough works of Rue Impériale, today rue de la République, and the redevelopment of the Place des Cordeliers under the Second Empire by the Prefect of the Rhône Claude-Marius Vaïsse. Urban sanctuary since 1971, not parish church, the church is erected as a minor basilica by Pope Francis on September 28, 2019.
History: The history of the church is intimately linked to that of the convent of the Friars Minor, or Franciscans, installed in this place on a land bequeathed by the Sénéchal of Grolée, attested around 1226, religious order founded by Saint Francis of Assisi (1182–126). These monks will soon be called "strings" because of the knotted rope used as a belt, as a sign of poverty. This sobriquet gave its name to the church and the neighborhood, in the heart of the Presqu'île in Lyon. This convent includes a small abbey church facing west-east.
