Catholic church building
église Saint-Nizier de Lyon
Saint-Nizier Church is a Catholic church in the city of Lyon, located in Saint-Nizier Square in the heart of the Presqu'île, between the Place des Terreaux and the Jacobins, in the Cordeliers district. It is one of the most important places of worship in the capital of Gauls, both in terms of seniority and prestige as well as architectural and monumental visibility. Dedicated to Nizier, one of the bishops of Lyon, the building is attested from the High Middle Ages.
After the year one thousand, while the political and economic importance of the city is growing, that of Saint-Nizier is growing, which is not without creating tensions with the main Lyon church, Saint John's Cathedral, and in particular with its canonial chapter. Completely rebuilt in the 14th and 15th centuries in flamboyant Gothic style, the church is classified as historical monuments by the list of 1840.
