The castle of Andlau (Haut-Andlau; German Hohandlau) is located in the French commune of Andlau, in the department of Bas-Rhin. The remains of the castle have been classified as historical monuments since June 1926.
History: Built on a narrow granite bar, at 451 meters above sea level, the Upper Andlau dominates the valleys of Andlau and Kirneck. The builder of the granitic block castle is certainly Eberhard d'Andlau between 1246 and 1264. In 1678, after Alsace joined France, he was looted by the troops of Marshal de Créquy. The castle remained in the hands of the Counts of Andlau until the French Revolution and was then used as a residence for a forester who served the family. It is the last Vosges castle inhabited until the Revolution. It was sold in 1796 to a merchant who, from 1806, dismantled the castle to sell materials in general indifference. In 1818, Count Antoine-Henri of Andlau bought the ruin and saved it from destruction. Consolidation work began in 1859.
