The Royal Garden of Medicinal Plants is a plant garden and a royal institution that historically preceded the Paris Plant Garden and the National Museum of Natural History, from its foundation in 1626 to 1793. It is located in what is currently the 5th arrondissement of Paris. The names and spellings designating this garden have changed over time: the Garden opened its doors to the public in 1640 under the name of "Royal Garden of Medicinal Herbs", then called "Royal Garden of Medicinal Plants", "Royal Garden of Plants" or "Plant Garden", more simply.
The garden was also commonly called the Jardin du Roy under the Ancien Régime, but it should not be confused with other "king's gardens", such as the grove of the same name located in the garden of Versailles. Moreover, while the National Museum had already been founded since the last years of the eighteenth century, the Garden was officially named Jardin du Roi during the period corresponding to the return to the monarchy, in 1814.
