About

The ancient Farges district includes the remains of Gallo-Roman period (between 30 BC and the end of the second century) discovered north of the rue des Farges, on a slope of the hill of Fourvière, in Lyon. Archaeological excavation is the first major rescue search conducted in Lyon in parallel with a real estate operation. Started in 1974 in difficult conditions, and continued until 1980, it discovers a terraced area that includes a peristyle house and smaller houses, shops and warehouses, as well as the foundations of the large spas of Lugdunum, whose location was unknown.

The excavations also revealed the importance of earth constructions in Roman architecture, little studied at the time. After its excavation, the site is partially covered and furnished as an archaeological garden free of access. The artefacts discovered from everyday objects enrich the Lugdunum Museum's collections.
