parc national du Mercantour
Mercantour National Park is one of the eleven national parks in France. It is located on horseback between the departments of Alpes-Maritimes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. It is especially known to be one of the wildest in France, and one of the most varied in terms of landscapes, sheltering very marked contrasts: its very special geographical location, close to the French Riviera, brings Mediterranean touches to these alpine mountains.
This is where the wolf naturally returned to France in 1992 from Italy. Its core is classified as a Category II protected area by the International Union for Conservation of Nature's World Commission on Protected Areas, while its optimal area of membership is classified as a Category V.
