Canadian Cemetery No. 2

This cemetery was created by the Canadian Corps after the successful capture of Vimy Ridge, a few hundred metres away, on April 9, 1917. Some of the soldiers buried there fell in this battle where they died as a result of their injuries. After the Armistice, this cemetery is considerably enlarged with the addition of bodies from many temporary cemeteries around. The cemetery was originally called CD 5 and was established as a battlefield cemetery of the 4th Canadian Division to bury Canadian soldiers who had fallen in the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Although the majority of the nearly 2,965 soldiers buried there are British, this cemetery has retained the name of Canadian Cemetery..
