About

The Natus necropolis is located near what was the Courneau military camp at La Teste-de-Buch in Gironde. This camp was set up there, during the First World War for "wintering" (in order to welcome them in winter), Senegalese troops stationed on the front. Living conditions, housing conditions and, above all, unsanitary conditions encouraged the spread of epidemics during the winter of 1916-17, resulting in the deaths of more than 900 soldiers, mostly black forces. The nominative list of deceased soldiers is available online on the Gironde departmental archives (see external links).
