The statue of Heracles in the Mauresque Park of Arcachon, Gironde, was installed in 1948 to commemorate the actions of the French Resistance in the fight against German occupation forces during the Second World War. The work of the archacon sculptor Claude Bouscau, this 3.1-metre-high nude represents the former Greek hero Heracles after he defeated the lion of Nemie. The statue is best known for issues related to the size and theft of the hero's penis.
