About

The ancient bridges on the Loire in the Tourangelle agglomeration are wooden bridges which, during the Roman Empire, allow the crossing of the Loire at the level of Fondettes and Tours, then called Caesardunum. Two of them, built in the first century, seem to have operated simultaneously, to the west and in the heart of the ancient city; the third to the east, built in the course of the third century before the city tightened in its enclosure, replaces the first two which are subsequently dismantled. The remains of these bridges, discovered or identified at the turn of the 21st century, are visible in the form of pile alignments embedded in the river bed; they emerge in more pronounced, frequent and lasting periods of stretching.
