About

Saint Martin Church is a parish Catholic church located in Heilles, Oise, France. Its central bell tower is Romanesque and dates from the first half of the 12th century, but the base was taken up as a sub-work around the middle of the 16th century, and lost its Romanesque character. The recovery made it possible to link the transept crusillons to both the choir and the nave by Berrichons passages, a case unique in the region.

The choir was rebuilt in the middle or during the second half of the 13th century in a Gothic style radiating a bit rustic, with capitals and vault keys without carved decoration. It is nevertheless interesting to represent one of the few examples of the application of this style to small rural churches. The transept followed shortly afterwards, and was apparently not vaulted.

The unique nave, rebuilt at the same time, retains its original walled ceiling, while the crucifixes were equipped with fake vaults during the second half of the 19th century. The northern crusillon undergoes more major changes, and is almost exclusively neo-Gothic. From the north side of the nave, only the large blocked arcades remain.
