église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption d'Ailly-le-Haut-Clocher
The church Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption d'Ailly-le-Haut-Clocher is located on the territory of the commune of Ailly-le-Haut-Clocher in the department of the Somme, about fifteen kilometers east of Abbeville.
History: The church was built in the 13th century. On 6 April 1548, the church of Ailly-le-Haut-Clocher was the scene of a tragic event: the nave where the inhabitants of the village had fled was set on fire by the soldier who had massacred 130 people there. Its bell tower, finished with a slate-covered spired roof, served as a landmark in the 18th century when measuring the Cassini map. It is also in reference to the elevation of the arrow of this bell tower that the toponym Ailly-le-Haut-Clocher formed. The church is protected as historical monuments: by order of 1 April 1910. During World War II, the German army established an observation post at the top of the bell tower and installed a machine gun of D.C.A.
The 1944 Allied bombing damaged the building.
