About

The castle of Comper is located near the forest of Paimpont, three kilometers east of the town of Concoret in Brittany. Originally medieval castle enjoying an enviable strategic position thanks to the protection offered by the vast pond and the forest surrounding it, it has experienced various destructions and reconstructions throughout its history. He passed into the hands of the barons of Gaël-Montfort, Laval, Rieux, Coligny and La Tremeille.

Dismantled in 1598 by order of Henry IV, he was burned during the French Revolution. There are few traces of its feudal parts, the Renaissance-style mansion having been rebuilt as a place of residence in the 19th century. It is the only one of the five castles historically linked to the Paimpont forest (and therefore to the Arthurian legend) that remains to date.

Several legends make it the birthplace and residence of the fairy Viviane. It has been home to exhibitions of the Arthurian Imaginary Centre since 1990. It has been listed as historic monuments since May 1996.

This concerns its enclosure, the manor, the court, the dyke and the moat.
