About

The monolithic church of Aubeterre is an ancient parish church dedicated to the Saint-Sauveur and then to Saint-Jean located in Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, in the Charente department and the diocese of Angoulême. Drained in a cliff overlooking the village from the 8th century, it was enlarged in the 12th century by a community of Benedictine monks. As one of the most important monolithic churches in France, it has been classified as historical monuments since 3 September 1912. However, the term troglodyte church, or underground, would be more accurate.
