Roman amphitheatre
arènes de Besançon
The Arenes de Besançon are remains of a Roman amphitheatre built in the first century in the city of Vesontio which later became the French commune of Besançon, in the Doubs department. It takes place on the bank of the Doubs opposite the ancient agglomeration. Still poorly known in the 21st century, it is between 122 and 130 m long.
Built on a slope on one side and in flat terrain on the other, it combines the characteristics of classical amphitheatres (Arles, Nîmes) and that of the so-called massive amphitheatres (Amiens, Tours). Delayed in the fourth century, it was searched only from the end of the nineteenth century and very few remains were visible. The monument is classified or listed as a historical monument from 1927.
