Milliarium
borne milliaire de Limoges
The Gallo-Roman honorary pillar of Limoges was probably a Roman route column, known at least since the eighteenth century and unfortunately destroyed in 1893 by the Public Works Department of the city of Limoges. Several authors, however, considered this stone unreadable, and even questioned its Milestone character.
"In closing, Mr. President [François Arbellot] expressed the well-justified regret that the city's public works department had thought it necessary to transform into pebbly menus the enormous mile terminal which, for so many centuries, had stood near the entrance of the Abbey of the Rule today Major Seminary. The place of this monument, assuming it interfered with traffic, was at the museum Adrien Dubouche. »
