château de Bagnac
The Château de Bagnac is a castle located in the commune of Saint-Bonnet-de-Bellac in the Haute-Vienne department. The remains of this Baroque castle, rebuilt in the 19th century on the site of the castle of the knight of Bagnac, are abandoned and degraded. The castle has been listed as historic monuments since 16 May 1975.
History: The present castle was built by the Marquis (Antony 1826-1892) and the Marquise de Saint-Martin de Bagnac (Legitimist royalist fervents) on the site of the old 15th century castle destroyed during the wars of religion, where Pierre de Bagnac was born in 1330, a great cardinal who was celebrated in Rome. The only part of the castle dating from the 14th century is the large corner tower, covered with a roof on a very steep slope, during the reconstruction of the castle. This castle was entirely rebuilt, while the original intention of the Marquis and the Marquise was only to restore it. However, after 1875, what appeared to be a restoration became a reconstruction. The Bagnacs swallowed up insane sums in this construction site that lasted more than 25 years.
